Von Donop Inlet (Hathayim Marine Park, Cortes Island)

50° 9.7′ N · 124° 57.4′ W

A long, narrow inlet cutting about 3 nm into the north-west side of Cortes Island, protected as Háthayim Marine Provincial Park. Several secluded coves give shelter in any weather. Lagoons, a reversing rapid and forest trails make it a good place to spend a day.

Practical

Coordinate is the OSM inlet point. Entered from the north end of Sutil Channel (chart 3538). There is a dangerous rock at the narrowest part of the entrance channel: go slowly and follow the chart. Anchor in 8-10 m (26-33 ft) in several coves; the head of the inlet is the most popular and fills first. Good all-weather shelter. No potable water and no boat launch (nearest at Whaletown or Heriot Bay). A rough route of about 5 km leads to Squirrel Cove, outside the park. PSP (red tide) may affect shellfish May to August: check DFO before harvesting. Wilderness camping allowed.
