Typhoon Season (Central Visayas)
9° 3.4′ N · 123° 7.5′ E · approximate
Typhoons can strike in any month, but the accepted season is June to November. Early storms tend to track north over Samar and Luzon, and later ones cross further south through the Visayas, Mindanao and Palawan. That is why cruisers here aim to be tied up in a hole like Bonbonon by late September.
Practical
Position approx: Bonbonon anchorage, the area's recognised typhoon hole. MV Solita (Woods, 2014): Nov-Jan is very windy with a good chance of tropical depressions; be settled somewhere protected such as Bonbonon, the Port Carmen boatyards (Cebu) or Puerto Princesa. Philippine typhoons move fast and in fairly straight lines, so seek shelter early and check the forecast daily. Super Typhoon Rai (Odette) crossed the Visayas as a Category 5 on 16 December 2021, causing severe damage (Noonsite). About 20 storms affect the Philippines each year (Noonsite). Official forecasts: PAGASA.
