Bonbonon Anchorage (Tambobo Bay)

9° 3.4′ N · 123° 7.5′ E

One of the principal typhoon holes in the Philippines: a deep cove at the southern tip of Negros behind Tambobo Bay, with a dog-leg entrance and mangroves and jungle all round. Inside is a long, flat-calm stretch of water where a community of live-aboard cruisers spends the typhoon season.

Practical

MV Solita (Woods, 2014): 9 3.39'N 123 7.49'E, 8-10 m over mud, excellent protection all round, very calm; they sat out tropical storms here at about 30 kn with everyone's anchor holding. Noonsite (Jan 2017): good holding in mud in about 5-10 m. Moorings from Boy and Arlene's Cafe (phone 0917 361 2437; Friday buffet, dinghy dock for cruisers) or from Emma (Wednesday buffet); can get crowded, with some yachts staying indefinitely. Free, really clean well water at the pump opposite Emma's. Fuel only by jerry can from Tambobo village, Siaton or Zamboanguita (each about 14 km); gas bottles in Siaton and Zamboanguita. Sari-sari shops for dry goods; fish early at the Tambobo pier; Siaton Sunday market; Dumaguete about 30 km (1-2 hours). Arlene and Boy help yachts dry out on bamboo docks. Poor mobile signal (Woods). Entrance: see the Bonbonon Entrance passage. Noonsite's security advice says you can check in at Dumaguete after anchoring here.
