Subic Bay Freeport Rainforest Fruit Bats
14° 48.4′ N · 120° 17.2′ E · approximate
Subic's forests shelter one of the few protected roosts of the endangered giant golden-crowned flying fox, the world's largest bat with a 1.5-1.7 m wingspan. Watch them stream out to feed at sunset.
Practical
Coordinates approximate: plotted at the Wikipedia reference point for the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, because roost sites move and are not published. Ask locally for 'Bat Stop II' on the Zambales Highway, which Wikivoyage names as the hotspot for seeing bats at sunset. Wikipedia: the species is IUCN Endangered and CITES Appendix I. Subic Bay is one of the three largely protected roosts, but hunting and tourist disturbance still threaten them. Keep your distance, don't use flash or shout, and never approach the roost trees.
