South Bais Bay Anchorage

9° 34.4′ N · 123° 8.5′ E

A big, sheltered mud-bottomed bay on the Tanon Strait coast north of Dumaguete, base for Bais's whale and dolphin trips and the Manjuyod white sandbar.

Practical

Solita (2012, Philippines Compendium): 09 34.4'N 123 08.5'E, 3-4 m over mud and sand; the bay entrance is almost closed off at this point, giving excellent protection from virtually all directions if you get close to shore. Small town on the north shore, good mobile signal, local yachts often anchor here. Caution: pass between the reef off the mangroves on the north side of the entrance and the reef/sandbar in the centre, which has fish stakes and traps on it. Freebird (Noonsite, 2015): good holding in mud; enter and motor up the eastern side of the bay; bamboo fish traps mark the reef off Arboles Point and the shoal near the point. Webb (2009) calls the south bay an excellent typhoon refuge but generally shoal, and warns that theft has been a problem: don't leave the boat unattended. See the 'South Bais Bay Entrance (Arboles Point)' passage. Bais City has a BPI bank with ATMs and a small supermarket (Wikivoyage).
