Paluan Bay East Anchorage

13° 21.2′ N · 120° 28.2′ E

A big open sand bay tucked in behind Cape Calavite and favoured by yachts running between Palawan and Manila or Puerto Galera; easy approach, good holding and the dark green bulk of Mount Calavite above.

Practical

Position: hackingfamily anchorage table 13 21.20N 120 28.23E, 25 ft sand (visited April); Globe 2G, Smart signal limited. Hackingfamily: no hazards approaching the eastern shore; good-holding sand; only tenable in the NE monsoon and then only in fairly settled conditions; in rougher weather go up into Paluan Bay proper and anchor off its northern beaches (OSM Paluan town 13.41583N 120.46265E). Sail The Philippines: 'a favorite anchorage for yachts sailing from Palawan to more northerly destinations', anchorage at almost any depth with good holding on sand, close inshore sheltered from most wave action; the north-west corner is quieter than off the town; in the NE monsoon strong breeze funnels from the Calavite Passage. Hackingfamily logged it as about 55 nm from Puerto Galera on their routing (straight line about 30 NM, computed). Does not offer much protection in the SW monsoon. Paluan town has small stores only - provision at Mamburao or Puerto Galera.

Best for

Overnight after rounding Cape Calavite southbound, or before it northbound

Season
