Across the passage on the Calumpang (Mabini) Peninsula, Anilao calls itself the birthplace of Philippine scuba and is a world capital of muck diving and macro photography - 560-plus nudibranch species, frogfish, mimic octopus, rhinopias and pygmy seahorses.

Practical

Position: Wikipedia coordinates for Anilao, Mabini (onshore - the sites are along the peninsula and around Maricaban, Caban and Sombrero islands). Over 50 sites (Blue Ribbon Divers): muck at Secret Bay (10-22 m, tip of the peninsula, rough in the NE monsoon); Kirby's Rock pinnacles (18-40 m, wall to 80 m, advanced/technical, shifting currents); Mainit Point in the Maricaban Strait (stronger currents, bigger fish); Twin Rocks and Sombrero (see entries); Ligpo Island; Mapating Cave. Currents next to none at sheltered sites, strong at deeper sites (Dive The World). The first marine sanctuaries were set up in 1991 at Bagalangit and San Teodoro (Wikipedia). Resorts cluster along the road and the area goes quiet after about 8pm. Anchoring for yachts is not documented - visit via a dive resort's bangka; respect sanctuary buoys. Stonefish in the shallows.
