Xcalak Flats Fishing

18° 16.3′ N · 87° 50.1′ W · approximate

Xcalak sits on a narrow peninsula between the Caribbean and Chetumal Bay, giving three fishing grounds - reef coast, inner mangrove lagoons and bay edge - for bonefish, permit, tarpon and snook.

Practical

Coordinate is the village (approximate); the flats are on the bay side to the west. XTC Fly Fishing: main targets bonefish, tarpon, permit and snook, plus snappers, jacks, barracuda and ladyfish; if wind, rain, tide or clarity spoil one area, the other two are usually fishable. Wikivoyage also lists Captain Victor Castro's fly-fishing trips on Chetumal Bay. Hire a local guide; a Mexican fishing permit is needed to fish from your own boat (Noonsite cruiser report; verify locally).
