Atlantic Hurricane Season (Costa Maya)

18° 42.8′ N · 87° 42.6′ W · approximate

This whole coast lies in the track of Caribbean hurricanes: Janet levelled Xcalak in 1955, Gilbert crossed Cozumel in 1988, Wilma stalled over Cozumel in 2005 and Dean made landfall just north of Majahual in 2007.

Practical

Coordinate is Majahual (approximate), near Dean's 2007 landfall. Season June-November (Wikipedia); local records put the peak in August-September (Spanish Wikipedia, Cozumel park and Xcalak). Hurricane Janet (27 September 1955) destroyed most of Xcalak; Wilma (October 2005) crossed Cozumel's north-east at about 140 mph moving very slowly, and with Emily (July 2005) cut live coral cover 56%; Dean (August 2007) wrecked the Costa Maya pier and much of Majahual; Beryl put Cozumel under a hurricane warning in 2024. The only recommended hurricane hole on this stretch is Puerto Aventuras marina (Noonsite); otherwise plan to be out of the area before a storm threatens.
