Majahual Anchorage

18° 42.7′ N · 87° 42.5′ W · approximate

A small lagoon behind the barrier reef off Majahual's malecón - turquoise, quiet when the cruise ships leave, but reached through a narrow cut and only 4-5 ft deep inside.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: placed inside the reef between Noonsite's reef-pass waypoint (18 42.64'N, 87 42.41'W) and the village shore; it is not a sounded anchorage. Port Captain (January 2019): there is a small dock in town used by fishing boats, open to yachts; the reef cut is small and he recommends hiring a local guide; inside depths are 4-5 ft - realistic for shoal-draft boats and catamarans only. The cruise-ship dock north of town is NOT open to sailboats. An older Noonsite note describes an anchorage inside the reef and a navy dock. Deeper-draft boats should treat Majahual as a settled-weather stop outside the reef or skip it.

Best for

Shoal-draft stop to visit Majahual or stage for Chinchorro

Season

Settled weather; small cut needs good light
