La Poza (Xcalak)
18° 16.4′ N · 87° 49.6′ W · approximate
'Tarpon Hole' - a spur-and-groove reef right in front of Xcalak village where a school of huge tarpon hangs out in 30-80 ft.
Practical
Coordinate is approximate: Spanish Wikipedia places La Poza in front of the village; point set on the outer reef east of town, not a published dive-site position. XTC: 30-80 ft, beginners to advanced; with a favourable current it combines with the Copa del Mundo pinnacle. Other Xcalak sites: La Chimenea (70-110 ft, advanced; 'Cathedral' and 'Chimney'), Alejandro's Reef (40-60 ft), Santa Julia (drifts to Punta Gavilán), Doña Nica (shallow wall, night dives), Hob Na (40-110 ft, 30 minutes north). XTC prices: 2-tank US$125, night dive US$110.
