San Blas Estuary Anchorage (El Pozo)

21° 32.5′ N · 105° 17.7′ W · approximate

The anchorage inside the San Blas river estuary (Estero El Pozo), lined with mangroves and backed by the old Spanish port town. It's the most protected anchorage between Mazatlán and Banderas Bay, but you get there by crossing a shifting bar.

Practical

Noonsite: anchor on the west side of the estuary, clear of the channel center. The anchorage extends up the estuary past the marina. Expect a current of about 3 knots through the anchorage, so set well and check the swing. It's busy, with commercial boats and jungle-tour pangas zipping back and forth, and the marina may be quieter. No-see-ums (jejenes) can be fierce, especially just after the full and new moon, so fit screens before dusk. Land at the town waterfront by the Muelle de San Blas and the Port Captain pier (see 'San Blas Town Dinghy Landing'). Coordinate is derived from the OpenStreetMap estuary-bank outlines, on the west side of the channel abreast of the marina, and is not surveyed.
