San Blas Jejenes (No-See-Ums)

21° 32.4′ N · 105° 17.3′ W · approximate

San Blas is notorious for jejenes, the tiny biting no-see-ums that have plagued the port since Spanish naval officers complained of its 'bad air'. They are the main reason many cruisers anchor well offshore at Matanchén.

Practical

Noonsite: they can be extremely fierce, especially just after the full and new moon. Carry plenty of repellent and coils, and fit fine screens on all hatches. Guidebooks recommend anchoring about a mile off the beach at Matanchén, and staying aboard at dusk helps. They are worst near the mangroves and the estuary. Coordinate is nominal (San Blas town).
