Rincón de Guayabitos Anchorage (Jaltemba Bay)

21° 2.0′ N · 105° 16.3′ W · approximate

An open-bay anchorage off the 2-km beach of Rincón de Guayabitos, a Mexican family resort town on Jaltemba Bay about halfway between Chacala and Punta de Mita. Boats stop here for the Isla del Coral snorkel, whale sightings in season and an easy stretch of beach.

Practical

Exposed and often rolly. A 2007 Latitude 38 cruiser report called Guayabitos 'rolly, touristy, and not very interesting', so treat it as a settled-weather day stop or overnight. Anchor off the middle of the beach clear of swimmers, pangas and the water-taxi lane to Isla del Coral. No published depth or holding data was found, so sound in. Expect loud music from the beachfront on weekends and holidays. Land the dinghy through the gentle surf on the beach. Fishermen sell their catch on the beach early in the morning, and the La Peñita Thursday tianguis is a short walk north across the river. Guayabitos is busiest during Semana Santa and Mexican summer holidays. Coordinate is derived from the OpenStreetMap 'Playa de Guayabitos' outline (way 886865515), about 550 m off the beach, and is not surveyed.
