Punta Sur and Ixchel Temple (Isla Mujeres)
21° 12.1′ N · 86° 42.7′ W
The island's southern cliff-top, about 20 m above the sea and the easternmost point of Mexico, where the ruins of a Maya temple to Ixchel, goddess of the moon and fertility, look out over crashing Caribbean surf beside a sculpture park and an old lighthouse.
Practical
Coordinate from the Wikivoyage listing. Hurricane Gilbert (1988) badly damaged the temple. Wikivoyage says entry is free after 5:00 pm (check daytime entry fee locally). Reach it by golf cart, taxi or bus - about 6-7 km from downtown, next to Garrafón. From the sea it is the landmark you round when approaching from Cozumel; give the reef off the point a wide berth.
Best for
Sunrise views and the island's Maya history
