Punta Sur Anchorage (Isla Cerralvo)
24° 8.3′ N · 109° 48.8′ W · approximate
A lee-side stop off the south end of Isla Cerralvo, where arroyos climb into the desert and the clear water holds some of the best snorkelling of a southern-Sea-of-Cortez week.
Practical
Coordinate is approximate: a water point about 250 m off the south shore, 1 km west of the Punta Sur light (SEMAR 24°08'14.52"N 109°48'09.9"W), placed from the OpenStreetMap coastline; no published anchor fix or soundings were found, so sound your way in and anchor on sand clear of rock. A Lindblad expedition (July 2004) landed on the south-east corner for walks up the arroyos and called the snorkelling there 'the best snorkeling stop of the whole week'. The south end is a roadstead: protected only from the north to northeast by the island, open to the south and to the strong current and wind chop The Log reports in the Cerralvo Channel; use it in settled weather or winter northerlies that are not wrapping around the point. Uninhabited island; no services. Part of the Islas del Golfo de California flora and fauna protected area.
Best for
Snorkel and arroyo walk on the way between Muertos and La Paz
Season
Settled weather; light northerlies
