Punta Herrero Fish Camp (Bahía del Espíritu Santo)

19° 19.2′ N · 87° 27.8′ W

A tiny lobster-fishing village on the point at the southern mouth of Bahía del Espíritu Santo, deep inside Sian Ka'an - the only settlement on this wild bay and the last sign of people between Punta Allen and Majahual.

Practical

Coordinate is GeoNames' position for the populated place Punta Herrero (19.3208, -87.4625; population 61, GeoNames); the headland itself, 'Herrero (Point)', is at 19.3126, -87.4457 (GeoNames). It lies in Felipe Carrillo Puerto municipality inside the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve; Spanish Wikipedia notes the bay's own shores are otherwise unpopulated and its shallows are rich in lobster. A dirt road runs north from Majahual (OpenStreetMap 'Mahahual - Punta Herrero'). Lobster is the village's livelihood - a 2022 photo essay in the Revista Latinoamericana de Antropología del Trabajo documents fishers working the peak lobster season and their 'chiquero' lobster shelters. No marina, fuel or supermarket: carry everything. Respect the fishermen's gear and shelters in the shallows, and observe Mexico's Caribbean lobster closed season (see the Banco Chinchorro closed-seasons entry). Anchor off in the bay only in settled weather; a 2009 crew reported big breaking swell at the bay mouth with about 2 knots of current inshore (see Bahía del Espíritu Santo Anchorage).
