López Mateos Whale-Watching Pier
25° 11.6′ N · 112° 7.4′ W
The panga landing at Puerto Adolfo López Mateos, one of the best-known places in Mexico to meet gray whale mothers and calves up close in the narrow channels of northern Magdalena Bay.
Practical
Coordinate is the OpenStreetMap 'López Mateos (Whale Watching)' landing. Season January-March (Wikipedia ES). Townspeople are organized into cooperatives that run the panga trips (Wikipedia ES); closer approach to whales than a yacht is allowed only with an authorized, licensed provider, so leave your boat or come by road - López Mateos is 28 km from Puerto San Carlos and 63 km from Ciudad Constitución. Most yachts cannot reach the town: The Log reports only shallow-draft sportfishers using the Soledad Channel. A gray whale sculpture marks the town.
Best for
Close encounters with gray whale calves
