Bahía Magdalena Anchorage (Man of War Cove)
24° 39.1′ N · 112° 7.2′ W
Man of War Cove, off the tiny island village of Puerto Magdalena 11 nm inside Mag Bay's entrance, is the best all-weather shelter on the Baja Bash - room for about 50 boats, protected in everything but strong east wind.
Practical
Position from GeoNames (Man of War Cove / Caleta del Acorazado). Watch for floating fish-hatchery pens on the approach. Ashore (by panga from Puerto San Carlos only): two part-time restaurants, Miramar and La Palapa, and a mini-mart. A port captain's annex is here - after anchoring, call on VHF 16 to say you cleared in at Ensenada; the Mexican Navy has a base here and at the south end of the bay. Schoolchildren appreciate notebooks, pens and crayons. Belcher Point (24.585 N 112.073 W), 3 nm inside the entrance, is an alternative anchorage on either side of the old whaling-station spit. In a southerly or hurricane threat The Log rates Man of War Cove, Puerto San Carlos and the north side of Belcher's Point as the best shelters in north Mag Bay. Gray whales fill the bay in winter.
