Bahía Magdalena Gray Whales

24° 38.1′ N · 111° 58.4′ W

Gray whales migrate into Magdalena Bay each winter to calve and nurse - mothers and calves cavort in the tidal currents at the entrance and through the bay's channels.

Practical

Pin is the GeoNames centre of Bahía Magdalena. The Log sees whales at the Mag Bay entrance in outgoing tides every November-January passage; in the lagoons the peak for mothers and calves is mid-February to late March. To approach whales closely you must go with an authorized, licensed provider (pangas from Puerto San Carlos and Puerto López Mateos run trips); keep your own boat clear. Puerto Adolfo López Mateos, near Boca la Soledad in the north (Wikipedia), is the other whale-watching town.
