Isla Mujeres Sailfish Season

21° 12.0′ N · 86° 39.0′ W · approximate

The deep blue water east of Isla Mujeres, where the Yucatán Current sweeps north, is one of the world's best places to catch sailfish, and the island has a big sport-fishing charter fleet.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: a point in deep water east of the island, chosen to represent the offshore grounds. Every person on board fishing (and, per long-standing Mexican guidance, everyone aboard a boat carrying fishing gear) needs a Mexican fishing permit, bought online. Sailfish, marlin, dorado and tarpon are reserved for sport fishing - catch-and-release is the norm. Wikivoyage quotes about US$40 per person for a 3-4 hour charter (older price - verify locally). Puerto Isla Mujeres sells bait at its fuel dock.
