El Bajo Seamount (Marisla)

24° 42.9′ N · 110° 19.3′ W · approximate

The famous Marisla seamount - a chain of three underwater peaks in open water where schooling hammerheads, silky sharks, mantas and fifty-plus green morays make one of the Sea of Cortez's great advanced dives.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: computed from Cortez Club's bearing of 8.2 mi at 032 degrees from Los Islotes. Peaks at about 16-18 m with walls to 30-40 m+; open water with often strong currents - advanced certification required. About 90 minutes by dive boat from La Paz. Hammerhead numbers vary from a few to hundreds; occasional whale sharks and giant Pacific mantas. Do not anchor on the seamount; go with an operator. Inside Archipiélago Espíritu Santo National Park: every person aboard needs the daily CONANP bracelet (225 MXN/person/day on the CONANP page) or an annual Conservation Passport.
