Caleta Partida

24° 31.8′ N · 110° 22.7′ W

The flooded crater of an extinct volcano between Espíritu Santo and Partida, ringed by cliffs and a fish camp - the classic first night out of La Paz, with room for a small fleet.

Practical

Position: Online Cruising Guide map pin (Cruisers Academy pin 24°31'59.6"N 110°22'45.0"W; OCG safe-distance waypoint 24°31.500'N 110°24.250'W). Straightforward approach from the west only - you cannot get a keelboat through from the east even if the chart suggests so. The northern lobe is far shallower than charts show (2-3 ft at the north end per Cruisers Academy); keelboats anchor along the edge of the shallows or in the heart of the bay in 8-25 ft, good sand and shell. Protected from N, E and S, but exposed to SW: when the Coromuel blows it can be miserable even in the north lobe, with boats dragging - leave for Bonanza, the east side of Partida (El Portico), or back to La Paz. Ashore: sand spit, pocket beaches, a dry-riverbed hike to caves on the north beach. Fishermen sometimes trade fish for fresh water or sodas. Inside Archipiélago Espíritu Santo National Park: every person aboard needs the daily CONANP bracelet (225 MXN/person/day on the CONANP page) or an annual Conservation Passport.
