Vieux-Fort Beach (Marie-Galante)

15° 59.3′ N · 61° 18.2′ W

A long, golden west-coast beach at the island's northwest corner where the first French settlement stood, backed by mangrove and a river mouth - 'the west coast at its most spectacular', according to Guadeloupe's tourism board.

Practical

Position is the Plage du Vieux Fort polygon (OSM). Also called 'plage du massacre' after the 1653 Carib attack on the settlers (Vieux-Fort trail notes). Mangrove boat trips and a bird hide nearby (see Vieux-Fort Mangrove). Manchineel trees along the shore are marked with a red ring - don't shelter under them. Reach on foot from Anse Canot via the Vieux-Fort trail, or by road.

Best for

A quiet beach walk and mangrove trip
