Petite Terre Lagoon Snorkel

16° 10.5′ N · 61° 6.6′ W · approximate

The 150 m channel between the islets is a natural aquarium: juvenile lemon sharks cruise in under a metre of water along the beach, while the 5-6 m centre of the channel has green turtles, barracuda, leopard rays and eagle rays.

Practical

Coordinate approx: the channel just off the Terre de Bas beach, from OSM coastline. Snorkeling Report: enter at the right-hand (eastern) end of the beach and drift left with the dominant current, using the last palm trees as your limit; current mid-channel is normally manageable with fins, but check with the wardens. Max depth about 6 m. Keep at least 5 m from turtles; do not chase them. Do not land on Terre de Haut even from the water. Some lagoon areas marked by buoys, ropes and signs (reef and three seagrass beds) are closed to swimmers. Diving needs prior authorisation; only snorkelling and canoeing are allowed. Carry a buoy if you swim across the navigation zone.
