Little Bay Anchorage (Montserrat)

16° 48.1′ N · 62° 12.4′ W

Montserrat's only port of entry, an open roadstead on the island's lush northwest tip with a grey-sand beach, the ferry and cargo wharf, and Marine Village's bars and dive shops a few steps from the dinghy landing.

Practical

Noonsite gives the arrival position as 16 48.13N 62 12.41W (used here); the Tourism Authority yachting page lists 16 48.11N 62 12.22W. Anchor in the southern part of the bay, clear of the clearly marked channel to the ferry/cargo wharf, and leave room for the large cargo ships and Ro-Ro to turn. Cruisers report sand with good holding in about 30 ft, but it is deep with a shelf and sand can be hard to find; dredging in August 2023 removed all moorings and they have not been reinstated (Noonsite, updated September 2026). Noonsite suggests the most protected spot is north of the dock off the small fishing fleet, room for a couple of boats. Rolly in any northerly swell, and the open bay can surf at the beach. Dinghies tie to the south side of the wharf (Port Authority will tell you where). Call 'Montserrat Port' on VHF 16 on entering Montserrat waters; Port Security monitors 16 around the clock. No anchoring on the natural reefs shown on chart no. 254. No lighthouses on the island, so night approaches are not recommended. Water from the Port Authority Operations Department at EC$75 per thousand gallons; garbage bins for bagged household waste on the port compound. Busy on small-cruise-ship and ferry days (Tourism Authority publishes a call list).

Best for

Clearing in and a base for the whole island; Marine Village dining ashore

Season

Dec–May best; rolly to untenable in northerly winter swells
