Darby Sink Cave

17° 39.6′ N · 61° 46.5′ W

A collapsed sinkhole more than 300 ft across and about 70 ft deep in the middle of the Highlands. Palms, ferns and lianas grow inside like a lost rainforest, so the treetops suddenly appear at eye level, and 8-ft stalactites hang under the overhang.

Practical

Coordinate verified from Wikipedia (Darby Cave). Walk about 40-45 minutes from Highland House on a track through scrub. Locals know the route, and a guide is recommended; a 2024 cruiser notes it requires one. Take water, a hat and closed shoes; there is no shade on the walk. Fallow deer and land tortoises are often seen on the way. An extinct great white shark tooth was found here in 1998. Barbuda Rentals and Tours and other operators run trips.
