Barbuda Wildlife (Deer & Tortoises)
17° 38.6′ N · 61° 45.3′ W
Barbuda's Highlands are home to European fallow deer, a national symbol found on only two eastern Caribbean islands, along with land tortoises, iguanas and the endemic Barbuda warbler.
Practical
Coordinate verified: Wikipedia's position for the Barbuda Highlands plateau, a protected area. Deer and land turtles are commonly met on the walk from Highland House to Darby Sink Cave, best early morning or late afternoon. Deer meat (venison) and land turtle are traditional Barbudan foods and may be offered locally. Look for the Barbuda warbler, a small grey-and-yellow bird, in the bush and village gardens. Red-billed tropicbirds nest in the Two Foot Bay and Hog Cliffs. Endangered West Indian whistling ducks call at dusk over the village ponds.
