Champagne Reef

15° 14.7′ N · 61° 22.4′ W

Snorkel or dive through curtains of warm volcanic bubbles rising from vents in the seabed - like swimming in a glass of champagne - over a reef where seahorses, frogfish, flying gurnards and squid are regular sightings.

Practical

Coordinates: OpenStreetMap 'Champagne Reef' spring (the bubbles). At the northern tip of the Soufriere-Scotts Head Marine Reserve, just south of Pointe Michel. Reserve user fee US$2 per person per site (paid to LAMA/wardens or via an operator - Nature Island Dive). Entry from a stony beach below the road; the reef drops to about 50 ft to the west and the bubbles are close to shore. Currents usually light; excellent night dive. No anchoring in the reserve without Fisheries Division permission - come by road from the Roseau moorings, by dive boat (Dive Dominica: snorkellers can join dive trips from US$37.20 incl. gear, taxes and park fee), or dinghy in calm weather. Busy on cruise-ship days - go early.
