Pacific Missile Range Facility (Barking Sands) Restricted Waters
22° 1.2′ N · 159° 48.4′ W · approximate
The US Navy's Pacific Missile Range Facility occupies the coastal plain from Kokole Point to the Barking Sands dunes, and the sea off it is a federal danger zone that closes without much warning during range operations - plan the Waimea-to-Polihale leg around it.
Practical
33 CFR 334.1390 danger zone (NAD 83): from the shore at 22-04-13.65N 159-46-30.76W south along the shore to 21-58-42.77N 159-45-26.35W, then 21-56-06.00N 159-46-55.91W, 21-58-59.81N 159-50-51.42W, 22-02-28.09N 159-51-28.15W, 22-06-30.71N 159-49-20.43W and back to the start. Dredging, dragging and seining are prohibited at all times; entering, transiting or remaining is prohibited during range operations, tests, training or raised force-protection levels. Closures are announced by Notices to Mariners, range boats, beach signs, patrols, and radio on VHF 6, VHF 16 and CB 22, and posted on the PMRF website and Facebook; schedule phones (808) 335-4301, 335-4388, 335-4523. Separately, a USCG safety zone (33 CFR 165.1406) from 22-01.2N to 22-06.3N, 159-44.8W to 159-50.7W is activated for target-vehicle launches by local notice to mariners. Coast Pilot also notes a safety zone north from Mana Point to Polihale. Coordinate is the approximate centroid of the danger-zone polygon. Monitor VHF 16 and call ahead before running the coast between Kekaha and Polihale.
