Mana Point and Barking Sands Coast

22° 1.7′ N · 159° 47.3′ W

Kauai's western extremity, a low sandy coast backed by the Barking Sands dunes - Nohili Dune is 100 feet high - where the trades split around the island meet again and the sea usually goes calm.

Practical

Coast Pilot: along the water's edge a strip of sand runs 2 miles either side of Mana Point, but the sea breaks on a lava ledge at the edge of the sand, making beaching dangerous except in smooth seas; the PMRF control tower is prominent. Tidal current 0.5 mile off Mana Point about 0.8 knot, setting south about 3 hours after low water at Honolulu and north about 3 hours after high water. Between Mana Point and Makaha Point calm or light variable airs prevail. A narrow sand shoal in 7-10 fathoms runs 1-2 miles offshore from Nohili Point to Alapii Point. Discolored water from drainage canals often extends 2 miles off. Coordinate: USGS GNIS 'Mana Point'. Inside the PMRF danger zone.
