Nakalele Blowhole
21° 1.6′ N · 156° 35.3′ W
A sea-spout on the lava shelf by Nakalele Point, the northern tip of West Maui, that can shoot spray dozens of feet when the north swell is running.
Practical
Park in the dirt lots on Kahekili Highway between mile markers 38 and 38.5; the walk down is rough lava and eroded rock with no facilities. Stay well back: waves surge without warning and can sweep people toward the hole, and the site has caused deaths. Car break-ins reported (to-hawaii.com). From seaward: Nakalele Point Light (21 01'45"N, 156 35'26"W, 142 ft) and several bare black rocks lie close off the point, and blowholes show along its southeast face (Coast Pilot).
Best for
Shore excursion with a car; landmark when rounding to the Pailolo
Season
Biggest with north swell and high tide
