Honolua Bay Winter Surf
21° 0.9′ N · 156° 38.4′ W
When winter north swells wrap into Honolua it becomes one of the world's famous surf breaks, and the summer snorkeling bay turns into a place to watch, not anchor.
Practical
Wikipedia notes a 'world-renowned surf break' and an annual women's professional surf contest in December. DAR advises avoiding the waters in winter, when high surf is common, and to-hawaii.com warns that winter surf makes snorkeling unsafe and the bay is for experienced surfers only. Watch from the Lipoa Point bluffs or the highway lookouts; do not bring a boat in.
Best for
Watching big-wave surfing from the bluffs
