Kaneohe Bay Special Anchorage Areas

21° 26.3′ N · 157° 47.2′ W · approximate

Two federal special anchorage areas in Kaneohe Bay, one along the south-east shore between the yacht club and Heeia and one along the west shore from Kahaluu to Waikane, where small vessels need not show anchor lights.

Practical

Position is the average of the five NAD83 boundary points of Kaneohe Bay (1) in 33 CFR 110.129b as tabulated in Coast Pilot 10. Area (1) runs from 21-26-16.6N 157-45-50.1W (off KYC) to 21-26-34.6N 157-48-27.1W (Heeia shore); area (2) runs from about 21-27-17N 157-48-58W north-west to about 21-30-46N 157-50-14W along the shore. Coast Pilot: anchoring in Kaneohe Bay outside these areas is limited to 72 hours; for authorization for longer stays contact the harbor master, 808-233-3603. State designated mooring areas A-D (HAR 13-235-35) overlap the south-east shore. Navigation cautions: channels and dredged areas have not been swept; numerous coral heads line the channels, especially around Moku o Loe, many marked by private pipes standing 3-5 ft above water; uncharted private floats, race-course buoys and fish and lobster pots are throughout the bay. Tide reference: NOAA station Moku o Loe (1612480).
