Coconut Island (Moku o Loe) Lee Anchorage

21° 26.0′ N · 157° 47.5′ W

Anchor in the trade-wind lee on the west side of Moku o Loe, the half-mile-long island of Gilligan's Island opening-credits fame, now home to the University of Hawaii's Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. Good mud holding and shelter in the southern third of the bay.

Practical

Waypoint from Noodle's Notes (author marks it approximate). About 35 ft, mud bottom, holding good; anchor as close to the island's fringing reef as practical for best shelter from the trades. Year-round. No practical shore access: the island is a state-owned research facility, its 64 acres of surrounding reef are the Hawaii Marine Laboratory Refuge, and the Coconut Island access pier on the mainland (Lilipuna Pier) is restricted to authorized personnel. Not a provisioning stop. Nearest marinas: Makani Kai Marina and Kaneohe Yacht Club to the south-east, Heeia Kea Small Boat Harbor to the north-west. 72-hours-in-14-days anchoring limit applies bay-wide (HAR 13-235-9). Tides: NOAA station Moku o Loe (1612480) on Coconut Island. Coast Pilot 10 reports significant uncharted coral shoaling on all sides of Moku o Loe, mostly south of the island, so approach the lee from the north-west with the sun high.
