Heeia Fishpond

21° 26.1′ N · 157° 48.5′ W

An 88-acre loko ia kuapa built between the 1200s and 1400s, the only Hawaiian fishpond fully enclosed by its 1.3-mile dry-stacked basalt and coral wall, now being restored by the nonprofit Paepae o Heeia. You see it from the sandbar and from the channel off Heeia Kea.

Practical

Position from OpenStreetMap (pond relation). The pond is 3-4 ft deep with seven working sluice gates; it is on the National Register of Historic Places. It lies immediately south-east of Heeia Kea Small Boat Harbor and Heeia State Park; there is no landing from the bay side, so visit by land (restoration volunteer workdays are run by Paepae o Heeia; check their schedule). A light on the pond wall (Heeia Pond) is charted.
