Honokohau Harbor Port of Entry (CBP)

19° 40.2′ N · 156° 1.6′ W · approximate

The Kona side's official port of entry, where yachts arriving from a foreign port (or a foreign-flagged yacht) clear US Customs and Border Protection; Noodle's Notes cleared here returning from the South Pacific.

Practical

Coordinate is the harbor position, not a CBP office; clearance is arranged by phone or the CBP ROAM app rather than at a fixed dock. Noonsite (July 2024) lists Honokohau as a Port of Entry with normal working hours 6am to 2pm Monday to Friday (its general Hawaii page gives 8am to 4:30pm); confirm hours before arriving, as weekend arrivals may wait until Monday. Report on arrival; only the person reporting may go ashore until formalities are complete. Noodle's Notes reports that ROAM often makes entry painless, and that Customs may not even visit the boat. Email the harbormaster before arrival for a temporary mooring arrangement. Boats arriving from another US state must instead check in with the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, (808) 832-0566; agriculture officers inspect for banned food and animals, and garbage must be double-bagged. Pets fall under Hawaii's animal quarantine rules. Per the Code of Federal Regulations, all three Big Island harbors (Kawaihae, Honokohau, Hilo) are ports of entry, but Honokohau is the practical one on the Kona side.
