Kona Sportfishing Fleet (Honokohau Harbor)
19° 40.2′ N · 156° 1.4′ W
Honokohau is home to the Kona charter fleet, which has made this coast a world-class big-game destination for blue marlin, 'ahi and other pelagics since the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament began here in 1959. Deep water lies only minutes outside the harbor.
Practical
Coordinate is the charter-boat row in OpenStreetMap, where boats such as Silky, Rod Bender, Medusa, Humdinger and Fire Hatt are mapped. The HIBT history credits the tournament with promoting the Kona coast as a big-game destination for six decades and underpinning the charter fleet. Open-ocean fishing is allowed and you can keep what you catch, but seasonal and geographic regulations apply to many species; check DLNR DAR rules before fishing nearshore. Keep clear of trolling boats and their spreads when transiting the coast.
Best for
Booking a marlin charter or watching the catch come in
