Zakynthos Carnival

37° 47.2′ N · 20° 54.0′ E

A Venetian-era tradition: two weeks of masked balls and parades in Zakynthos Town before Orthodox Lent, ending in St Mark's Square with the 'mask funeral'. It is known all over Greece as one of the liveliest carnivals.

Practical

Dates move with Orthodox Easter (the carnival ends before Clean Monday, usually February or March). Coordinate is Solomos and St Mark's squares (Wikivoyage). This is off-season for cruising: expect winter weather, few visiting yachts, and plenty of room on the town quay, with the strong S–SE winter winds that push boats into the south basin (SailingIssues).

Best for

A winter visit to the island's biggest party

Season

Two weeks before Orthodox Lent (Feb–Mar)
