Easter in Zakynthos Town

37° 47.2′ N · 20° 54.0′ E · approximate

Orthodox Easter is a major spiritual event on Zakynthos: the Byzantine icon of the Virgin of Chrysopigi is carried through town to St Mark's Square, where at midnight a chain of candle flames spreads across the square.

Practical

Easter Sunday brings lamb roasted in the squares, folk dances and red-dyed eggs (zanteisland.com). Wikivoyage recommends March–May, when the island is green and in flower and the Easter parade takes place. Coordinate is Solomos and St Mark's squares (Wikivoyage), approximate for the procession route. Early-season sailing: fewer boats, but April can still bring southerly systems.
