Bochali Venetian Castle (Fortress of Zakynthos)

37° 47.4′ N · 20° 53.5′ E

The Venetian fortress on the hill behind Zakynthos Town, partly destroyed in the 1953 earthquake, surrounded by pinewood and ruined churches. From the walls the 360-degree view takes in both coasts of the island and the harbour below.

Practical

Reach it from the yacht quay via Bochali village (about 1 km uphill; taxis are easy in town). Ruins inside include the Church of Sotiras, a gunpowder store, a Venetian-period prison and British-period barracks (OpenStreetMap). Visit late afternoon, then eat in Bochali for the night view over the port. Opening hours are not published on the sources used; verify locally.
