Panagia Islet & Lighthouse (Gaios)

39° 12.2′ N · 20° 11.7′ E

The small islet guarding the north entrance to Gaios, crowned by the white monastery of the Virgin (Yperagia Theotokos) and a walled lighthouse. Its light has marked the channel since 1825.

Practical

Paxos Map says the lighthouse is a 7.8 m square tower with a focal height of 26 m; it was automated and converted to solar power in 1982 and shows one flash every 5 seconds, range 10 nm. It marks the north channel into Gaios (Sea-Seek). The monastery was formed in 1720. Its feast on 15 August is the island's big pilgrimage, when worshippers are served beef soup (see Panagia Feast). Land by dinghy only in calm water; there are no facilities.
