Gaios Outer Anchorages (North & South Entrances)
39° 11.9′ N · 20° 11.4′ E
Open-water anchorages just outside the southern entrance to Gaios, between Agios Nikolaos islet and the Paxos shore. Use them when the quay is full or when a northerly makes the quay uncomfortable.
Practical
mySea gives 3-10 m over sand, mud, weed and rock; holding ranges from good to only moderate, and the anchor can jam in rock crevices, so dive on it or set a trip line. In strong northerlies this is calmer than the town quay (mySea). Two more spots lie just north, in the approach to the north channel: one at 4-6 m over mixed sand and rock (39.20138N 20.19180E), and one at 3-8 m that mySea says gives good shelter in southerlies except SW, with lines ashore (39.20185N 20.18865E). Keep clear of the buoyed swimming areas and of ferry and tripper traffic. The pilot book quoted by a July 2019 cruising blog calls Gaios 'chaos in the summer', and the anchorage outside had little room. Dinghy into town.
Best for
Overflow when the quay is full; calmer than the quay in northerlies
