Mediterranean Monk Seals (West Coast)

37° 47.1′ N · 20° 40.4′ E

The critically endangered Mediterranean monk seal lives along Zakynthos's cliff-bound west coast, breeding in sea caves. The bay below the Schiza cliff near Kampi is known locally as the 'Seal Gulf'.

Practical

Coordinate is Schiza bay (OpenStreetMap). Wikipedia notes monk seals are present on the west coast; zanteisland.com says they breed every year in the marine caves of the Seal Gulf, and that one has used a cave on Marathonisi. If you see a seal, keep well away, do not enter caves where seals may be resting, and do not feed them.

Best for
