Porto Vromi

37° 49.1′ N · 20° 37.9′ E

A narrow fjord-like inlet on the wild west coast, between white cliffs, used by the tripper boats to Navagio. It is one of the safer anchorages on this side of the island, especially on a buoy.

Practical

Coordinate is Vromi bay (OpenStreetMap). SailingIssues: anchor in 10–15 m on sand, weed and rock fouled with chains, discarded ropes and nets, so a tripline is vital. The shallow quays are taken by tripper boats and fishermen, but there is room to take a line to the rocky shore. Locals may lend a mooring buoy; at least three buoys seem meant for visiting yachts, at €40–50 a night (SailingIssues, current page; verify locally). Unsuitable in SW winds, and katabatic gusts can sweep down the hills at night. Halfway in is the Stamatis cave; more sea caves north of Giannaki rock. A motorboat rental company crowds the bay by day. The passage between Agios Ioannis islet and Giannaki rock is about 75 m wide: stay mid-channel on a SSE or NNW heading (SailingIssues; see passages). No shops; a picnic area and boat rentals ashore.

Best for

The west-coast overnight for Navagio and the caves

Season

May–Oct; unsuitable in SW; night katabatics
