Navagio Shipwreck Beach (Zakynthos)
37° 51.6′ N · 20° 37.5′ E
A white-pebble cove ringed by sheer limestone cliffs, with the rusting hull of the MV Panagiotis on the beach. The coaster ran aground in October 1980, reportedly while smuggling cigarettes, and the cove became one of the most photographed beaches in the world.
Practical
CLOSED in 2026: a Joint Ministerial Decision bans all access to the beach and swimming anywhere in the cove, and boats may not approach or anchor within 50 m of the shoreline, in force until 31 October 2026 (To Vima, June 2026). The cove has had rockfalls in 2018 and after a September 2022 earthquake. Even when open it is a fair-weather anchorage only: leave within 15 minutes of the prevailing wind picking up, as it builds quickly (SailingIssues). Visit from the sea early or late in the day to avoid the tripper fleet (Wikivoyage). The bay was originally called Agios Georgios.
