Koilada Traditional Boatyards (Tarsanades)

37° 24.6′ N · 23° 7.9′ E · approximate

On the beach just before Koilada harbour, opposite Koronida islet, two yards have built more than 1,000 boats in fifty years — including the last large wooden boats made in Greece and the village's trademark 'trachentaria' caiques.

Practical

Coordinate approx: the OSM 'Karnagio' (boatyard) node on the beach south of the harbour; the yards line the shore between there and the Basimakopoulos Shipyard. The traditional yard is Lekka's; Basimakopoulos is the modern one. Most hulls on the slips are now GRP and the work is mainly maintenance, but the old shipbuilding machinery and the frame-planking-deck sequence can still be watched (Greek Gastronomy Guide recommends a visit); ask before walking among the cradles. Walk from the Koilada quay in a few minutes.
