Gyra Beach, Lagoon & Windmills

38° 51.0′ N · 20° 42.1′ E

The long sand-and-pebble strip that runs west from the canal entrance along the outside of the Lefkada lagoon, lined with old stone windmills and a favourite spot for windsurfers.

Practical

Greeka describes Gyra (Gira) as coarse sand with scattered pebbles, partly organised with a couple of beach bars, popular with windsurfers, with a deep, rock-strewn seabed. OpenStreetMap maps several old windmills along the spit around 38.838-38.842 N, 20.680-20.684 E, one of them now a bar and another a restaurant. Behind the beach, the Divari and Ivaria lagoons host cormorants, herons, coots, swans and other migratory birds from autumn to spring (Greeka). Reach it by taxi, bike or a long walk from town; not a boat anchorage.
