Atokos Seasonal Protection Zone (no sailing within 300 m, May-Oct)
38° 29.2′ N · 20° 48.6′ E
Atokos, the uninhabited, privately owned "camel-hump" island at the edge of the Inland Sea, is inside a Natura 2000 area; a 2025 Port Authority decision bans boats from its surroundings in the summer season to protect monk seals.
Practical
Sailingissues.com: from May 1 to October 31, sailing, anchoring, fishing, swimming and landing are all prohibited within a 300 m radius of Atokos (Decision 13/2025, Port Authority of Ithaca), to protect wildlife such as the monk seal; the island is also off limits in September. This effectively closes One House Bay, Cliff Bay and the SW cove during the main season. Confirm the current rule with the Ithaca Port Authority before planning a stop. allovergreece: private island owned by the Tsakos shipowning family, inside a Natura 2000 area. Coordinate is the island centre (allovergreece). Lunch-stop alternatives while Atokos is closed (May 1-Oct 31): Aspro Bay on Arkoudi islet (day use, westerly or northerly weather) or Kastos (Sarakiniko Bay, Vathy Vali or the harbour).
