Ancient Palairos

38° 50.1′ N · 20° 49.5′ E

The hilltop ruins of ancient Palairos, whose 2 km circuit of walls, still standing to full height in places, is one of the most extraordinary fortifications in western Greece.

Practical

About 11 km north-west of the harbour: roughly 25 minutes by taxi or a 2-hour hike (sailingissues.com). The city flourished in the 3rd century BC and was abandoned after Octavian founded Nikopolis in 31/30 BC; walls in polygonal masonry from the 5th century BC, six towers by seven gates, usable battlement stairs, and a Hippodamian street grid. Position from OpenStreetMap. Allow a full day; carry water.
